The Piscataway peoples lived in and around the Baltimore area when English Captain John Smith sailed up Chesapeake Bay in 1608. The English started establishing permanent settlements in the area in 1661, and Baltimore was founded in 1729. After the construction of canals and the drainage of marshes, Baltimore became a significant port city. Its relative proximity to the Midwest made it a logical terminus for the famous Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad.

More than 620,000 people live in Baltimore, and about 2.7 people live in the greater metropolitan area. Baltimore is perhaps best known as home of the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University. The Port of Baltimore is one of the most significant ports on the Eastern Seaboard, and handles more than 35 million tons of imports and exports every year.
